Description
View of bronze plaque installed on boulder at Belle Isle located at the intersection of Picnicway and North Shore Road. Inscription reads: "A bit of the history of Belle Isle. Belle Isle was called "Wah-NA-Bee-Zee" or "Swan Island" by the Indians. Captain George McDougall bout it in 1769 for eight barrels of rum, three rolls of tobacco, six pounds of vermillion paint, and one belt of wampum. Detroit purchased the island in 1879 for $200,000. The first bridge connecting it with the mainland erected in 1889 was burned in 1915. The present bridge was opened in 1923. Presented to the city of Detroit in the month of September, 1926."
