Commission appointing William O. Stoddard as Secretary to the President to sign patents for lands
Transcript: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN President of the United States of America. TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME GREETING: Know ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Diligence and Discretion of William O. Stoddard, of Illinois. I have Nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the People, do Appoint him Secretary to the President to sign patents for lands, under the authority of the sixth section of the act of July 4th, 1836 and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of that Office according to law; and to have and to hold the said Office with all the rights and emoluments thereunto legally appertaining unto him, the said William O. Stoddard during the term of four years from the 15th day of July, 1861, unless this Commission be sooner revoked by the President of the United States for the time being. In Testimony whereof I have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the DEPARTMENT of the INTERIOR to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington the seventeenth Day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty-one and of the Independence of the United States of America the eighty-sixth.
