Hurlbut Memorial Gate, Waterworks Park
Angle view of Beaux-Arts monument at Waterworks Park in honor of Chauncey Hurlbut. Stone monument has domed roof supported by columns; several children stand in front of monument. Printed on front: "Hurlburt [sic] Memorial, Water Works Park, Detroit, Mich." Printed on back: "Hurlburt [sic] Memorial, Water Works Park. The 72 acre plot of ground on Jefferson Avenue, owned by the city and partially occupied by its water works pumping station, has been made one of Detroit's beauty spots. The water supply is pumped through a long tunnel from Lake St. Clair to the distributing point. The park is remarkable for its big floral park, and the memorial at the entrance which was built in honor of the late Chauncey Hurlburt [sic], for many years one of the city's water commissioner and president of the board. No. 582. Published by A.C. Dietsche, Detroit, Mich. Made in Germany." Handwritten on back: "Friday, Dear Mrs. O., Went over to Walkerville yesterday found the friend went to see had died this spring. No one left here that I know. Spent the p.m. in the cemetery found over 50 of my old friends there .. am going to the ... " Card is postmarked August 18.
