Hotel Fort Shelby
View of Hotel Fort Shelby from corner; multistory brick and stone building. Awning over building entrance; cars travel in street. Printed on front: "Hotel Fort Shelby, Detroit, Mich., 8248." Printed on back: "Hotel Fort Shelby, Detroit, Mich. Detroit perpetuates a historic name in the New Hotel Fort Shelby, recently opened. This hotel is situated on the site of the Old Fort which consisted of an elaborate log fortification with earthen embankment erected by Captain A. Bird of the 8th British regiment in 1778. Possession of the fort changed hands several times, and the British finally gave it up on Sept. 28, 1813. In 1826, the fort, then in a dilapidated condition, was given by the government to the city. It was demolished and the ditch filled in during 1827."
