Label on back: "William W. Ferguson (1857-1910). First Negro elected to the state legislature of Michigan. Son of Dr. Joseph Ferguson (1822-1877). Original picture owned by Mrs. Lenore Graine of Kalamazoo, granddaughter of Wm. W. Ferguson, who lent it to Leslie Hanawalt for photographing." Handwritten on back: "Wm. W. Ferguson (1857-1910). First Negro in Michigan legislature."
