View of bronze relief plaque with portrait of Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr., credited with developing the game of baseball. Text on plaque reads: "Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr. 'Father of modern base ball.' Set bases 90 feet apart. Established 9 innings as game and 9 players as team, organized the Knickerbocker baseball club of N.Y. in 1845. Carried baseball to Pacific coast and Hawaii in pioneer days." Printed on back: "Base ball was invented in Cooperstown, New York, by Abner Doubleday and first played in this village in 1839. The National Base Ball Museum and Hall of Fame and Doubleday Field are maintained here as a shrine to the national game. Pub. by National Base Ball Museum."
