Description
Officers on horseback leading infantry battalion between ranks of spectators on Detroit street. Streetcar tracks in street. Handwritten on mat back: "Major C.W. Harrah and Lt. F.L. Abel at head of battalion leaving Detroit April 16, 1898, for War with Spain." Typed on label on mat back: "Harrah, see Clowes, The Detroit Light Guard. -- Frederick L. Abel; Adjutant 31st MVI. Joined for duty and enrolled April 28, mustered May 11, 1898. Originally 1st Lt. 2nd Independent Bn. qnd [sic] Adj. M.N.G. Commissioned 1st Lieut. and Adjt. 31st M.V.I. May 8. Resign. accepted and honorably discharged from U.S. service June 30, 1898. Captain Adjutant 1st Regt Inf. MNG May 23, 1900."
