Description:
Group of firemen in uniform pose with firehoses and horse-drawn fire engine; "Lafayette" painted on side of fire engine. Printed on front: "J. Randall, Detroit." Handwritten on back: "Photograph taken about 1860 showing the first steam fire engine owned by the city of Detroit. In the background is the old original Russell House and City Hall. Beginning at the left, the frontman is Stephen Pratt, next to him Ben Clark, then James Henry, all pipemen, then William Wolf who was driver and foreman, John McDuff, pipeman; Andrew Laggagan, engineer; John Marker, fireman; Mark Gascoyne, pipeman; James McDuff, pipeman; John Scott, driver of hosecart and at the present time the oldest man in the Dept. Last man is John Kevy."
