This house was built in 1802, on property purchased by Colonel Hamtramck. Hamtramck, who came from Quebec, is famous for his service to the American cause during the Revolution. He was with Gen. Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and was chosen to be the first American Commandant of Detroit. He held this post from the time of the British evacuation on July 11, 1796, until the arrival of General Wayne two months later. Hamtramck again became Commandant in the year he erected the house pictured. He died the following year leaving his property to his widow. In 1892, the house, though still standing, was in a dilapidated condition annd was soon demolished. It was located on the river bank between what are now Van Dyke and Baldwin Avenues."
