Handwritten on mat back: "The house in Paw Paw, Mich., in which Joseph Anthony Labadie was born on April 18, 1850, & Mrs. James Phillips, who was the first person to see him, being present at his birth. The house is moved from its original position & very much altered. Taken in July, 1914."
