Typed on back: "The stem of the revolving disk was about 4" off center, and opening was accomplished by an outer hydrostatic pressure, acting on the larger portion of the disk. This device was still in working order when removed. No. 3 intake, removed November 1934, contract RC-27. Was constructed in 1890. Tee at outer end of cylindrical, 6'-0" diam. intake pipe. Front outlet marks connection to pipe, left outlet was connected to upstream or easterly strainer box, while right outlet connected to downstream, or westerly strainer box. Disk at top was an emergency inlet, arranged to open automatically if strainer boxes become clogged with ice. This inlet device was normally held closed by a counterweight."
