View of bronze tablet marking the site of Detroit's only whipping post, installed on building at the southeast corner of Woodward and Jefferson. Inscription reads: "This tablet marks the site of Detroit's only whipping post. Detroit's first and only whipping post was erected in Woodward Avenue near this location in 1818 to rid the town of petty thieves and vagabonds. The last two culprits to be punished were flogged by the sheriff in 1830, and shortly afterward the whipping post was removed, the law legalizing its use was repealed on March 4, 1831. Presented to the city of Detroit in the month of September, 1926."
