Workers applying alkaline bath to automobiles, Willys-Overland Company factory
View of men applying an alkaline bath to automobile bodies at the Willys-Overland Company factory. Label on back: "From United States Advertising Corporation, Toledo, Ohio. For immediate release. Alkaline bath eliminates acid bubble on new Willys cars. In these days of excess acidity even automobile bodies do not escape. That is why the rough egg-shell finish so often mars the smooth contour, especially of the rear quarters of sedans. Engineers of Willys-Overland Motors, Inc., have discovered the cure. After the cleaning acid is applied to the metal body to prepare it for the prime coat, a second bath is given with an alkalizing agent. The tiny bubbles that remain in the microscopic pores of the steel are destroyed and when the prime coat and final finish are applied the paint surface is smooth and glossy. This photograph shows workmen in the Willys-Overland plant applying the alkaline bath. As a result of this important discovery, body finish on the new Willys cars is an outstanding feature."
