Peter Lafferty residence

Small two-story wooden-frame house, with steep roof and small square windows. Small group of people gathered around both front entrances. Lumber is scattered on ground, other houses in background. Handwritten on back: "Old Lafferty House, on River St. bet. 12th and 13th, 1860. For many years one of the conspicuous marks on the landscape along River Road, now Jefferson Ave., was the elm in front of the Lafferty House. The main portion of this building is said to have been erected prior to 1750 and an addition built in 1815. The home stead and the form were purchased in 1778 by Louis Vessiere des Laferte. He had come to Detroit from Canada and had opened a tailor shop on St. Joseph's Street within the fort. In 1861 the house was either burned or dismantled. It was situated on the river between what are now 12th and 13th Streets; Peter Lafferty, grocer, 470 River, (Dir. 1859)."
